Cricket is one of those sports that people tend to either love or hate. It is entirely possible to move from one camp into another, with many realising the joys of cricket as they get a bit older and the idea of sitting down in the sunshine with some sandwiches and a few drinks suddenly begins to sound like bliss.

There are a few places around the Merseyside area that you can watch some form of the sport, but not many where top-class cricket enters the equation. Sometimes, though, that changes and the opportunity to get yourself along and watch some excellent players comes around.

Liverpool & Lancashire

First things first, then, and an explanation of why it is that Lancashire County Cricket sometimes sees its matches played out in Liverpool. Nowadays, the north-west of England is broken down into nine official regions, which are made up of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.

Obviously Liverpool and the surrounding areas of Knowsley, St. Helens, Sefton, Halton, the Wirral and Warrington fall into Merseyside, but that wasn’t always the case. In fact, Liverpool was historically considered to be part of Lancashire, only changing in 1974 with the abolition of the administrative county.

As a result of this historical context, the majority of people from Liverpool looking for a cricket team to follow will keep an eye on Lancashire when it comes to county matches. That doesn’t come as a complete surprise when you consider the fact that the only other options that even vaguely close by are Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, meaning that those old ties to Lancashire remain a key part of the thinking of older Scousers.

The launch of The Hundred might have been done to persuade people to follow a team, but you’d struggle to get many Liverpudlians to throw their weight behind the Manchester Originals.

Why Lancashire Play in Liverpool

It doesn’t happen often, but every now and then the Lancashire County Cricket team plays some of its matches on Merseyside. There can be numerous different reasons for this, but the most common is when Old Trafford, the usual home of the LCC, is being used for something. Right now, for example, the aforementioned The Hundred is in full swing, meaning that Lancashire need to find a new home for their matches. On the 20th and 22nd of August 2025, Aigburth Cricket Club will be used as the home for the Red Rose’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup games that are taking place.

These games provide people with a great chance to check out the cricket odds and predictions for today and have a flutter if they fancy, all whilst being able to get along and see some excellent cricket being played on your doorstep. The fact that the games are being played in the school holidays means that people can get along and watch them with their kids, slowly beginning to indoctrinate them into the sport that they might well fall in love with. The truth of the matter is that not many people will make the journey to Old Trafford, but Aigburth will be a much easier sell.

Take Advantage

Whilst it is obviously great to have such excellent cricket being played in Liverpool, it is important to take advantage of it whilst you can. The truth of the matter is that it doesn’t come around all that often at the level that we’re talking about here, thanks to the fact that Old Trafford is a ground that is good enough to host Test cricket. Southport and Birkdale can put on an excellent show, whilst Aigburth is also a great place for the sport to be played, yet none of them are used to host the county cricket matches as often as many people would like, so you’d be mad not to get along now.

On top of that, the more popular the sport is when it comes to Liverpool, the more likely it is that it will come back more often. This is the first time that we’ve welcomed Lancashire County Cricket since 2021. Although many of the biggest names in the sport will be absent because they will be playing in The Hundred, those that will turn up in the city will still be well-known names to those with a passing interest in the sport. Yes, Old Trafford is where you’ll need to head if you want to be able to see the very best in the sport, but in terms of convenience and quality, Aigburth will do just fine.
