The Derby Days – Liverpool Royal Court: 12th September to 18th October
The Liverpool Royal Court is excellent at creating theatre productions specifically aimed at people from the area. Most towns and cities do not have this sort of home-grown, locally focused theatre on their doorsteps, so we are very lucky.
The latest play coming out of the Royal Court fitting this theme is The Derby Days, by Ian Salmon, a local writer who knows Scousers well, because he is one. This play is about something close to his heart: families who have both red and blue supporters among them.
The cast are Dominic Carter, Sarah White, Elliott Kingsley, and Ellie Clayton.
Here is the official blurb:
Dave Derby and Debbie Day are happily married. Well, they’re not married really. And they’re not that happy on Derby day because Dave’s a die-hard red and Debbie’s a proper blue. Even their cat’s got two names. What sort of cat answers to Divock and Duncan?
Their daughter Chloe is back from London with a new fella in tow and he’s got a deep, dark secret. One that could cause more chaos in the Derby-Day family than Wayne Clarke and Gary McAllister combined. With her parents acting like kids, Chloe is fuming and this might be the final straw. Will they stop kicking off before the big game?
You don’t have to be a scouser or a football fan to enjoy the play though. It’s about a family falling out in the funniest ways, and everyone can enjoy a bit of that, can’t they?
