Steak Night? Go to Hawksmoor Liverpool

The days of English food being miserable and tasteless are long gone. It is no more the case that the likes of the French get to lord it over their neighbours on the other side of the English Channel, with numerous culinary masters having made their name on these shores.

Liverpool is a city that has not yet had a Michelin Star attached to any of its restaurants, with Fraiche on the Wirral being the closest, but it has still had plenty of excellent eateries on offer for people to visit.

Hawksmoor is one of the latest additions to the food scene on Merseyside, but what is it about and what does it offer?

About Hawksmoor

The first Hawksmoor restaurant opened in 2006, with the chain having been founded by Will Beckett and Huw Gott. Having previously worked in kitchens and bars in the East End of London, the pair felt that there was a gap in the market for high-quality beef that had been well-butchered, tasting different ranges of beef from around the world.

They reached the conclusion that the best beef was actually that from the United Kingdom, serving British beef at their new location on Commercial Street in the capital. Despite its success, it took four years before they opened another branch.

That was in Seven Dials, also in London, and was so successful that it helped the parent company, Underdog, improve its turnover from £4 million to £11 million. In 2013, the founders decided to sell a majority stake (or should that be steak?) to Graphite Capital, a private equity group.

One of the key ideas of Hawksmoor is its sustainability model, as well as money raised for charities such as Action Against Hunger. In the years since the takeover, the chain has opened numerous different venues around the United Kingdom, with the Liverpool restaurant opening in 2022.

The Liverpool Restaurant

It was in the November of 2022 that the Hawksmoor group opened a restaurant in Liverpool. Whilst the buildings that play host to Hawksmoor in the likes of New York and Dublin are no doubt impressive, they will have to go some way to be better than the India Buildings on Water Street.

Built between 1924 and 1932, it was opened as an office building with a shopping arcade and an entrance to an underground station, suffering bomb damage during the Second World War. One of its original architects was tasked with restoring it to its former glory, influenced by the Italian Renaissance.

Monday 15 August 1960 John Lennon got his passport from the passport office in India Buildings on Water Street at 9.30 before dashing across the city to jump aboard Alan Williams’ Morris J2 mini bus outside the Jacaranda Club on Slater Street and set off with the band for their first trip to Hamburg

The Grade II-listed location can be considered to be an apt location to have a steak restaurant that considers itself to be a cut above the rest, with the interior taking on the style of the Roaring Twenties. The original fittings have been used alongside antiques from the same era that have been meticulously sourced, including the brass-trimmed lights on the ceiling that were originally streetlights in Paris during the 1920s.

It is ideally located for those that might want to explore what Liverpool has to offer, with the likes of the Albert Dock and the Liverpool ONE being just around the corner.

What to Expect

If you are considering heading along to Hawksmoor in Liverpool, then you will probably want to know what sort of thing you are likely to experience. As you will no doubt have gathered, this is a chain that puts serving steak front and centre of what it offers.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t get anything else, but it is certainly a location that is going to be enjoyed by meat eaters a lot more than their vegetarian cousins. One of the things that many people will be surprised by is that you can get an excellent meal even if you’re on something of a budget, provided you head along at a specific time.

Of course, as one of the best steakhouses in the UK, if not the world, not everything here is about feeding people on a budget. In fact, you can expect to spend a pretty penny if you want to pick up the best of the best that Hawksmoor has to offer. It is also worth pointing out that not everyone has enjoyed their experience here, so don’t expect the world on a plate.

That being said, if you’re looking for somewhere to head to in order to be able to pick up a tasty bite to eat before you head to the theatre, say, or where you can have a private dining experience, Hawksmoor has got you covered.
