British Musical Fireworks Championship: 20th – 21st September 2024

Get ready for lots of “Ooohs” and “Aaahs” because the British Musical Fireworks Championship is coming around again.

This annual event is held every year in Victoria Park, Southport, and families flock to see it.

The event will take place on the 20th and 21st of September this year, and it’s nice and easy to get to from Liverpool as Merseyrail run plenty of trains. Victoria Park is only 10-15 minutes from Southport train station and it’s not a late finish, so there should be plenty of time to get back to Liverpool if that’s where you are coming from. It’s only 45 minutes in the car.

The gates open at 18:00, with the first display starting at 20:00, the second at 20:30, and the last display starting at 21:00. The event finishes at 21:30.

Tickets cost £12.90 for general admission, or £26.88 if you want to watch from the seated areas. Those prices include booking fees and kids under 5 go free.

If you want to go you will need to book tickets online ahead of time, as there is no ability to pay on the night.

What is it?

British Musical Fireworks Championship Southport

If you haven’t heard of the Fireworks Championship you are in for a treat.

They call it a pyro musical competition, so in the same way a dancer would choreograph their dance moves to music, these guys choreograph their fireworks to music.

This creates a spectacular audio visual experience that really is thrilling. I’ve seen the fireworks display at EPCOT (Disneyland) and this is on par.

They use over two tonnes of explosives to create the show and over 10 tonnes of fireworks in total weight so it really is a mammoth task to organise. It takes 15 technicians 12 hours to set the whole thing up, using around 5km of wire to connect everything and make it run to precise timings.

Don’t worry – it’s safe!

There are places to get refreshments, or you can bring your own, and lots of the kids buy sparkly toys to wave in the air like you might get at a concert or a fair. It’s a lovely family experience that people of all ages can enjoy.

Well worth keeping the kids up late for.
